A person who has done good, has done what is wholesome, has protected others from fear, has not done evil, has not done cruelty, and has not done misdeeds, does not feel remorse.

ITI 31  Atapanīya sutta - Not Causing Remorse

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, as I have heard:

“Dveme, bhikkhave, dhammā atapanīyā. Katame dve? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco katakalyāṇo hoti, katakusalo, katabhīruttāṇo, akatapāpo, akataluddo, akatakibbiso. So ‘kataṁ me kalyāṇan’tipi na tappati, ‘akataṁ me pāpan’tipi na tappati. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā atapanīyā”ti.

“Bhikkhus, there are these two |mental qualities::characteristics, traits, and tendencies of the mind, shaped by repeated actions and sustained attention, guided by particular ways of understanding; they may be wholesome or unwholesome, bright or dark [dhammā]| that do not cause remorse. What are the two? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person has done good, has done what is |wholesome::healthy, beneficial, useful [kusala]|, has protected others from fear, has not done evil, has not done cruelty, and has not done misdeeds. He does not feel remorse thinking, ‘I have done what is good,’ and he does not feel remorse thinking, ‘I have not done what is evil.’ Bhikkhus, these are the two mental qualities that do not cause remorse.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

The Blessed One spoke on this matter. In this regard, it is said:

“Kāyaduccaritaṁ hitvā,
vacīduccaritāni ca;
Manoduccaritaṁ hitvā,
yañcaññaṁ dosasañhitaṁ.

“Having abandoned bad conduct by body,
and by speech;
Having abandoned bad conduct by mind,
and other actions associated with |blame::fault, wrong, error, moral mistake, criticism [dosa]|.

Akatvākusalaṁ kammaṁ,
katvāna kusalaṁ bahuṁ;
Kāyassa bhedā sappañño,
saggaṁ so upapajjatī”ti.

Not having performed unwholesome actions,
but having performed many wholesome ones;
At the breaking up of the body, the wise one,
|arises::is reborn, re-arises, appears as if placed [upapajjati]| in heaven.”

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

This matter too was spoken by the Blessed One, as I have heard.
