“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, kūṭāgārassa yā kāci gopānasiyo sabbā tā kūṭaṅgamā kūṭaninnā kūṭasamosaraṇā; kūṭaṁ tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ—mahantattena; evameva kho, bhikkhave, ye keci kusalā dhammā, sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā; appamādo tesaṁ dhammānaṁ aggamakkhāyati. Appamattassetaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvessati ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkarissati.
“Bhikkhus, just as the |rafters::support beams, wooden framework of a thatched roof [gopānasī]| of a building with the peaked roof all slope towards the peak, incline towards the peak, and meet together at the peak, so too, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome qualities there are, they all slope towards |diligence::quality of wishing to do one’s work or duty well, with alertness, carefulness and care [appamāda]|, incline towards diligence, and meet together in diligence; diligence is considered to be the foremost among the qualities. For a diligent bhikkhu, this is to be expected - that he will develop and extensively cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path.
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appamatto ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāveti ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkaroti?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ; sammāsaṅkappaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ …pe… sammāvācaṁ bhāveti …pe… sammākammantaṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāājīvaṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāvāyāmaṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāsatiṁ bhāveti …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appamatto ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāveti ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkarotī”ti.
And how, bhikkhus, does a diligent bhikkhu develop and extensively cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view |dependent on seclusion::supported by detachment, by means of disengagement [vivekanissita]|, |supported by dispassion::based on fading of desire [virāganissita]|, |based on ending::supported by cessation [nirodhanissita]|, |culminating in complete relinquishment::ripening in release, culminating in letting go [vossaggapariṇāmī]|; similarly he develops right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right collectedness, dependent on seclusion, supported by dispassion, based on ending, culminating in complete relinquishment. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a diligent bhikkhu develops and extensively cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path.”

“Bhikkhus, just as whatever root fragrances there are, all of them are overshadowed by the |kāḷānusāriya fragrance::dominant fragrance [kāḷānusāri]|; kāḷānusāriya is considered to be the foremost of them because of its superior intensity. In the same way, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome qualities there are, they are all rooted in diligence and meet together in diligence. Diligence is considered the foremost among the qualities. For a diligent bhikkhu, this is to be expected - that he will develop and extensively cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path.”

Appamattassetaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvessati ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkarissati.

In the same way, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome qualities there are, they are all rooted in diligence and meet together in diligence. Diligence is considered the foremost among the qualities. For a diligent bhikkhu, this is to be expected - that he will develop and extensively cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path.”

“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci pupphagandhā, sabbe te vassikaṁ gacchanti; vassikaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ—mahantattena; evameva kho, bhikkhave, ye keci kusalā dhammā, sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā; appamādo tesaṁ dhammānaṁ aggamakkhāyati. Appamattassetaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvessati ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkarissati.
“Bhikkhus, just as whatever flower fragrances there are, all of them are overshadowed by jasmine; jasmine is considered the foremost of them because of its superior intensity. In the same way, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome qualities there are, they are all rooted in diligence and meet together in diligence. Diligence is considered the foremost among these qualities. For a diligent bhikkhu, this is to be expected - that he will develop and extensively cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path.”

“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci kuṭṭarājāno, sabbe te rañño cakkavattissa anuyantā bhavanti, rājā tesaṁ cakkavatti aggamakkhāyati; evameva kho, bhikkhave ye keci kusalā dhammā, sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā; appamādo tesaṁ dhammānaṁ aggamakkhāyati. Appamattassetaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bhāvessati ariyaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ bahulīkarissati.
“Bhikkhus, just as whatever regional kings there are, all of them follow the wheel-turning monarch; the wheel-turning monarch is considered the foremost of them. In the same way, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome qualities there are, they are all rooted in diligence and meet together in diligence. Diligence is considered the foremost among these qualities. For a diligent bhikkhu, this is to be expected—that he will develop and extensively cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path.
