Venerable Vaṅgīsaperson

Vaṅgīsa wandered village to village, 'drunk on poetry,' until he saw the Buddha and faith arose; hearing the teaching on aggregates, sense fields, and elements, he went forth (SN 8.12). His gift becomes his training: seized by lust at the sight of finely dressed women, he answers himself in verse, defying Māra (SN 8.1–2); moved by Dhamma talks, he extols Sāriputta, Moggallāna, Koṇḍañña, and the assembly the same way (SN 8.5–11). The chapter closes with him 'recently attained perfection': master of the three knowledges, fulfilled in the Buddha's instructions.
Discourses
On the full moon night of the Pavāraṇā ceremony, the Buddha invites the assembly of five hundred arahant bhikkhus to reproach him for any bodily or verbal fault. Sāriputta declares that the Buddha is blameless, the Buddha extols Sāriputta’s great wisdom, and Venerable Vaṅgīsa utters verses in praise of the pure assembly and the Buddha.
