“Orimañca, bhikkhave, tīraṁ desessāmi pārimañca tīraṁ.
¶ 1“Mendicants, I will teach you the near shore and the far shore.
Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.
¶ 2Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.
¶ 3“Yes, sir,” they replied.
Bhagavā etadavoca:
¶ 4The Buddha said this:
“Katamañca, bhikkhave, orimaṁ tīraṁ, katamañca pārimaṁ tīraṁ?
¶ 5“And what, mendicants, is the near shore? What is the far shore?
Micchādiṭṭhi orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammādiṭṭhi pārimaṁ tīraṁ …pe…
¶ 6Wrong view is the near shore, and right view is the far shore. …
micchāvimutti orimaṁ tīraṁ, sammāvimutti pārimaṁ tīraṁ.
¶ 7Wrong freedom is the near shore, and right freedom is the far shore.
Idaṁ kho, bhikkhave, orimaṁ tīraṁ, idaṁ pārimaṁ tīranti.
¶ 8This is the near shore, and this is the far shore.
Appakā te manussesu,
¶ 9Few are those among humans
ye janā pāragāmino;
¶ 10who cross to the far shore.
Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,
¶ 11The rest just run
tīramevānudhāvati.
¶ 12around on the near shore.
Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,
¶ 13When the teaching is well explained,
dhamme dhammānuvattino;
¶ 14those who practice accordingly
Te janā pāramessanti,
¶ 15are the ones who will cross over
maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
¶ 16Death’s dominion so hard to pass.
Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,
¶ 17Rid of dark qualities,
sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;
¶ 18an astute person should develop the bright.
Okā anokamāgamma,
¶ 19Leaving home behind
viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
¶ 20for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,
¶ 21try to find satisfaction there,
hitvā kāme akiñcano;
¶ 22having left behind sensual pleasures.
Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,
¶ 23With no possessions, an astute person
cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
¶ 24should cleanse themselves of mental corruptions.
Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,
¶ 25And those whose minds are rightly developed
sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
¶ 26in the awakening factors;
Ādānapaṭinissagge,
¶ 27letting go of attachments,
anupādāya ye ratā;
¶ 28they delight in not grasping.
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,
¶ 29With defilements ended, brilliant,
te loke parinibbutā”ti.
¶ 30they are quenched in this world.”
