The elder the Buddha made teach. Reluctantly assigned to instruct the nuns, Nandaka gave Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī's five hundred a lesson on the six senses and their objects as impermanent, stressful guests (MN 146); the Buddha praised a Dhamma talk of his so thorough that the Teacher's own back ached in the waiting (AN 9.4); and he taught the young layman Sāḷha to verify wholesome and unwholesome qualities for himself, not on any teacher's word (AN 3.66).

Using the similes of a burning lamp, a tree's shadow, and a carved cow, venerable Nandaka teaches five hundred nuns how wisdom severs attachment, leading all of them to stream-entry.
