SN 47.12 Nālanda sutta - At Nālandā

Venerable Sāriputta declares a “lion's roar” of faith in the Buddha's unsurpassed awakening. Using a fortress gatekeeper simile, he infers a universal Dhamma principle: all Buddhas awaken by abandoning the five hindrances, establishing mindfulness, and cultivating the seven awakening factors.

PTS 5.159–5.160

AN 7.67 Nagaropama sutta - Simile of the Fortress

Using the metaphor of a well-provisioned frontier fortress, the Buddha outlines the safeguards of the spiritual life. Equipped with seven good qualities and nourished by the four jhānas, a noble disciple’s mind becomes a fortress that cannot be overrun by Māra.

PTS 4.106–4.112
