Kimila asked the question every tradition must answer: why does the true Dhamma not last long after a Realized One's quenching? The reply, given more than once, is a curriculum of respect: the Dhamma endures when monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen hold reverence for the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the training, and each other, and fades when they do not (AN 6.40, AN 5.201), with seven qualities of respect and reverence that keep it long (AN 7.59). He also received the sixteen steps of mindfulness of breathing in full (SN 54.10), the practice that keeps a teaching alive one breath at a time.
