Venerable Sāriputta explains the ten strengths of a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements.

AN 10.90  Khīṇāsavabala sutta - Strength Of One Who Has Exhausted Defilements

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

Then, Venerable Sāriputta approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. While Venerable Sāriputta was sitting to one side, the Blessed One said this to him:

“kati nu kho, sāriputta, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’”ti?

“How many, Sāriputta, are the strengths of a bhikkhu who has |exhausted::worn away, slowly destroyed, consumed, ended [khīṇa]| the |taints::outflows, discharges; (comm) mental defilements [āsavā]|, with which a bhikkhu who has exhausted the taints declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The taints are exhausted in me’?”

“Dasa, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti. Katamāni dasa?

“Venerable sir, there are ten strengths of a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, with which a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’ What are the ten?

1.) Idha, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aniccato sabbe saṅkhārā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aniccato sabbe saṅkhārā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

1.) Here, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, all |formations::intentional constructs, intentions, karmic activity [saṅkhārā]| are seen as |impermanent::unstable, transient, unreliable [anicca]|, rightly, with perfect wisdom. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

2.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aṅgārakāsūpamā kāmā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aṅgārakāsūpamā kāmā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

2.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, sensual pleasures are seen as a pit of burning embers, rightly, with perfect wisdom. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

3.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno vivekaninnaṁ cittaṁ hoti vivekapoṇaṁ vivekapabbhāraṁ vivekaṭṭhaṁ nekkhammābhirataṁ byantībhūtaṁ sabbaso āsavaṭṭhāniyehi dhammehi. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno vivekaninnaṁ cittaṁ hoti vivekapoṇaṁ vivekapabbhāraṁ vivekaṭṭhaṁ nekkhammābhirataṁ byantībhūtaṁ sabbaso āsavaṭṭhāniyehi dhammehi, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

3.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the mind is inclined towards seclusion, leans towards seclusion, slopes towards seclusion, and rests in seclusion, enjoys renunciation, and is entirely freed from all mental qualities that are the source of the defilements. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

4.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

4.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the |four establishments of mindfulness::four foundations or objective domains of mindfulness that one gradually establishes and cultivates as a direct way of practice. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

5.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

5.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the |four right efforts::The four right efforts prevent the arising and lead to giving up of unarisen harmful and unwholesome qualities, and lead to the arising, stability, retention, growth, and full development of wholesome qualities. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

6.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

6.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the |four bases of psychic powers::four bases of spiritual powers, roads to supernormal abilities. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

7.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pañcindriyāni bhāvitāni honti subhāvitāni. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pañcindriyāni bhāvitāni honti subhāvitāni, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

7.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the |five faculties::mental faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, collectedness, and wisdom. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

8.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pañca balāni bhāvitāni honti subhāvitāni. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno pañca balāni bhāvitāni honti subhāvitāni, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

8.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the |five strengths::unshakable mental powers of faith, energy, mindfulness, collectedness, and wisdom; they mirror the five faculties but are firm and stable in the face of opposition. [pañcabalā]| are cultivated and well developed. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

9.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

9.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the |seven factors of awakening::the seven factors of enlightenment, namely mindfulness, investigation of dhammas, energy, joy, collectedness, tranquility, and equanimity. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

10.) Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvito hoti subhāvito. Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvito hoti subhāvito, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

10.) Furthermore, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, the |noble eightfold path::the path consisting of right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right collectedness. And even this, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, is a strength, by which strength a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’

Imāni kho, bhante, dasa khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’”ti.

These, venerable sir, are the ten strengths of a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements, with which a bhikkhu who has exhausted the defilements declares the exhaustion of the taints: ‘The defilements are exhausted in me.’”
